EVBB Annual Conference 2022, Athens, Greece – Climate Crisis: The role of VET

In 2022, the urgent issue of climate change and environmental degradation took center stage as it posed a grave threat to Europe and the global community. Climate change emerged as a “crisis multiplier,” amplifying existing challenges and presenting profound implications for international peace and stability. The consequences of inaction were dire, with the potential to jeopardize everything that provided safety and security.

To address this critical situation, the conference organized by the European Association of Institutes for Vocational Training (EVBB) convened from 20 to 22 October 2022 in Athens, Greece. The event was hosted by our esteemed member, AKMI.

The conference served as a platform for experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to come together and deliberate on viable solutions to combat climate change and protect the environment. Participants engaged in discussions about the urgency of adopting sustainable practices, mitigating carbon emissions, and promoting eco-friendly policies.

One of the primary objectives of the conference was to emphasize the role of Vocational Education and Training (VET) in the fight against climate change. VET played a pivotal role in equipping the workforce with the necessary skills and knowledge to embrace sustainable practices across various industries.

Through lifelong learning, VET empowered individuals with expertise in green technologies, renewable energy, and environmental conservation. These skills were essential for tackling the challenges posed by climate change and safeguarding Europe’s future.

Moreover, the conference provided a platform for sharing innovative ideas and best practices in sustainable development. Participants explored ways to integrate environmental education into VET curricula, inspiring the next generation of environmentally conscious professionals.

The event also highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in driving sustainability initiatives. Collaborations between VET institutions and businesses were essential in aligning skill development with the needs of a green economy.

In conclusion, the 2022 conference held in Athens served as a crucial milestone in addressing the pressing issue of climate change and environmental degradation. By recognizing the indispensable role of VET in nurturing environmentally responsible professionals, the conference aimed to mobilize collective efforts to secure a sustainable and resilient future for Europe and the world. Together, through bold and innovative actions, Europe strived to lead the way in combating climate change and preserving the planet for generations to come.
