About DAPP Malawi

DAPP Malawi established the Mikolongwe Vocational School (MVS) in 1997 with the aim of increasing equitable access to skills education in Malawi, particularly in rural area of Mataka Village traditional authority Likoswe in Chiradzulu district southern region of Malawi. The school is registred by TEVETA under Ministry of labour. The school offers the following courses; Electrical Installation, Edible Horticulture, Bricklaying , Textiles and Fashion Designing, Plumbing, Fabrication and Welding, Carpentry and Joinery, Cosmetology, Community Development, Shoe Making. These courses are offered formally and informally.
Mikolongwe Vocational School have a vision and mission of a generation of youth /young people who are skilled and self-reliant through their engagement in various social-economic activities continues to contribute to the government of Malawi’s growth and development strategies through equipping youth with competent technical and vocational skills and knowledge for them to become active productive members of society by starting up small scale businesses or be able to secure employment. The school offers both formal and informal training courses and has a boarding capacity for 330 students. The school reach out to more youth with vocational skills to young vulnerable men and women through mobile training and satellite centers which are normally DAPP Teachers Training Colleges.
The school is involved in the development of local skills ecosystems to provide market-oriented and high-quality vocational skills.
Our emphasis is addressing the enormous challenges faced by Malawian youth, the gap of unemployment rate among the youth is still on higher side and the skills and knowledge imparted to the youth promotes self-reliance through economic strengthening strategies like linking them to money lending institutions, cooperatives and self-employment initiatives.
To achieve reaching out to more youth, the school continues making collaboration with various stakeholders who have same objective agenda of assisting venerable youth with informal skills development program both youth and local farmers around the school.
DAPP Malawi recognizes that vocational education and training is an important element in development work as it can link young people’s competences with employers’ needs and enhance self-employment and job creation. bringing vocational training closer to the needs of dynamically changing and evolving labour markets and economies can help young people and Women move into more productive and sustainable jobs.

Achievements

  • Establishment of a vibrant agriculture production unit which includes; aquaculture, livestock and horticulture production.
  • Graduated over 15000 youth in various trades.
  • Established business incubation unit.
  • Many graduates have established small scale enterprises where they are able to employ other youths.
  • Secured partnerships with sun for water GIZ project on solar power irrigation system.
