EVBB Annual Conference 2018, Sofia, Bulgaria – JOBS FOR THE FUTURE: SMART VET FOR SMART DEVELOPMENT

From June 6th to 8th, 2018, the European Association of Institutes for Vocational Training (EVBB) hosted its 22nd international conference in Sofia, Bulgaria, in partnership with the European Vocational Training Association (EVTA) and the Bulgarian-German Educational Institution (BGCPO). The conference’s theme was “JOBS FOR THE FUTURE: SMART VET FOR SMART DEVELOPMENT – VET and further training models for the economy in the context of digital developments as a safeguard of competitiveness and social cohesion.”

Taking place during the EU Council’s Bulgarian Presidency, the conference held the High Patronage of the Bulgarian Presidency, reflecting its significance and commitment to shaping the future of vocational education and training in Europe.

Throughout the event, passionate keynote speakers and project presentations emphasized the importance of VET in nurturing human potential, attracting talents, and providing equal opportunities for qualification, upskilling, and reskilling. The focus was on investing in education and social cohesion to meet the challenges of the future, with VET identified as the key to Europe’s development and success.

A highlight of the conference was the presentation of the prestigious “THE Europa” trophy, awarded by the Adalbert Kitsche Foundation to VET providers for exceptional projects addressing the educational needs of disadvantaged individuals. The University of Applied Management Studies (HDWM) Mannheim received the award for its success in migration and diversity policy, showcasing the value of inclusive education and opportunities.

The conference culminated in the signing of the “SOFIA Declaration,” a joint commitment by EVBB, EVTA, and BGCPO to work together for the future of Europe and its children. The declaration aligned with the priorities and strategies of the Bulgarian Presidency at the EU Council, emphasizing solidarity, stability, security, competitiveness, and cohesion.

The “SOFIA Declaration” endorsed four practical recommendations, including fostering digitization within the VET world, supporting and implementing the dual-system education model, promoting adult and lifelong learning, and utilizing their networks to support quality and inclusive VET policies. These strategies aimed to enhance competitiveness, provide new job opportunities, and foster social cohesion, thus contributing to the EU labor market’s growth and inclusivity.

The EVBB 22nd International Annual Conference 2018 served as a critical platform for fostering cooperation and dialogue among VET providers and stakeholders. The conference’s discussions and outcomes advanced the cause of smart VET and its vital role in driving smart development, positioning Europe for a prosperous and inclusive future.
