About KwaZulu-Natal Experimental College (KNEC) / from Humana People to People South Africa (HPP SA)

Established in 2002 by HPP South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal Experimental College (KNEC) is fully accredited with the National Qualifications Framework (NQF Level 4) and provides specialised training in ECD and Community Development. The training combines theory, practical internships, and entrepreneurship modules. Students spend extended placements in community preschools, applying inclusive pedagogy and classroom management skills in real settings. This hands-on model ensures that graduates are well prepared to address South Africa’s acute shortage of qualified ECD practitioners. KNEC collaborates closely with the Department of Basic Education, local municipalities, and community stakeholders to align with national early learning priorities. Beyond technical instruction, the college promotes inclusivity by opening pathways for young women and people with disabilities, equipping them with professional qualifications that enhance employability and contribute to improved early learning outcomes in underserved communities.

Achievements

Accredited Training at Scale: More than 600 young people have qualified in ECD and Community Development through KNEC since 2002. Employment Impact: Tracking between 2015–2024 shows that over 180 of 221 graduates secured employment or continued in the ECD sector. Preschools of the Future (POF): Three project phases trained 110 new ECD teachers and helped register 20+ community preschools in KwaZulu-Natal. Inclusive Education Pathways: The Preschool Pedagogy and Community Development VET Training project improved infrastructure and adapted training methods, enabling 28 students with disabilities to complete ECD training Upcoming Expansion: From 2025, this initiative will train 60 youth (60% women, 2% with disabilities), combining coursework, internships, and entrepreneurship support
