SeaAhead sets sail: a new European initiative for excellence in maritime training

Athens, Greece | May 2025

On 21st of May, the SeaAhead project has officially launched in Athens, bringing together a powerful alliance of 24 partners from 7 countries, all committed to reshaping the future of vocational education in the maritime sector.

Why is this so important? Because the maritime industry, a key pillar of the European economy, is navigating a period of profound transformation. From digitalisation and green technologies to growing global challenges, the need for skilled professionals is greater than ever. SeaAhead steps in with a clear ambition: to equip maritime learners with the tools, knowledge and mindset to thrive in this changing environment.

At the heart of the project is the creation of Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs) focused on maritime education. These centres will help bridge the gap between education and the labour market by introducing modern learning methods, such as simulation-based training and cybersecurity modules. They will also support the green transition by promoting sustainability skills and innovation across the entire maritime value chain.

The project’s strength lies in its diversity. From maritime academies and VET providers to leading industry actors, policy institutions and European networks like EVBB and ECSA, the consortium brings together experience, vision and a deep commitment to quality and relevance.

The Kick-off Meeting in Athens marked the beginning of a collaborative journey with real impact. Partners have already begun outlining their priorities and working together on shared goals, including stronger regional cooperation, updated training pathways, and better international mobility for students and professionals alike.

SeaAhead is more than just a project, it’s a coordinated European response to the urgent need for modern, inclusive and future-oriented maritime education. And this is just the beginning.
