The IEK Glyfada’s is supervised by the General Secretariat for Vocational Education, Training, Lifelong Learning and Youth, of the Ministry of Education with the mission to provide Initial Vocational Training to upper secondary graduates. At the current semester it hosts 410 students and 93 instructors divided in 12 specialties, developing in 19 classes in the fields of Economics and Administration, Health and Welfare, Retail Business, Information Technology, Applied Arts and Food. The IEK offers NQF and EQF 5 level vocational curricula and belongs to post-secondary non-tertiary formal education. Graduates can sit for exams to enter University after successful accreditation exams. Upon completion of their studies, graduates receive a Vocational Training Diploma of EQF level 5 and ISCED 3. A diverse group, made up of both young people entering the labor market for the first time, and university graduates/students seeking to retrain in a different field form our students. For the young the Institute provides the skills and competencies to enter the market & succeed in their careers. At the IEK by combining both school and work-based learning, learners have the opportunity to apply in internship what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations, and to develop valuable workplace skills and competencies. For the university graduates/students IVT provides them with a path to redirect and redefine their career. They acquire new skills and competencies, and explore new areas of interest. There is also a 10%, ages 35 to 55+, which concerns professional redefinition, in the majority women which are most affected by unemployment. Since 2020 we also have enrollments form refugees. The socio-economic background of most students is low, with limited family or personal income.
We are one of the 1st Vocational Institutes to apply self assessment, set goals for the training year 2022-2023, evaluate the goals achieved within the IEK and by external organizations. November 2022 we presented the outcomes of the pilot CEDEFOP research for trainers and trainees in which we were part of the advisory group for 2 years in order to examine the possibility of future a panEuropean survey covering all the components of VET.
Our status as an experimental institute also seems to attract a diverse and talented group of trainers and trainees to participate in our innovative programs. This, in turn, provides us with a wealth of perspectives and ideas, which will be valuable for our continued growth and success.
Overall, our recognition as a leading experimental institute in Attica Department and in Greece is a significant accomplishment which has provided us with many opportunities for continued growth, innovation, and expansion in the VET sector and is achieved thanks to our participation in European projects and activities.
